Why Nurturing a Love of Reading Matters More Than Ever

If you’ve ever watched a child completely lose themselves in a story, you’ll know there’s something truly magical about it. Reading isn’t just about learning to decode words on a page, it’s about opening doors to new worlds, ideas, and possibilities.

As a teacher (and a mum!), I’ve seen first-hand how reading can transform a child’s confidence and curiosity. When children enjoy reading, everything else seems to click into place. They start to do better in school, their vocabulary grows, and they begin to see the world through new eyes. And it’s not just me saying that - research now backs up what teachers have known for years: children who love reading tend to thrive, both academically and emotionally.

The International Literacy Association calls reading a fundamental right for every child - and I couldn’t agree more. Every child deserves the chance to discover the joy of stories, to see themselves in books, and to explore worlds beyond their own.
